Did You Know?
Safety lamps came into wide-spread use for miners as far back as the 1800’s. The lamps were delicate and gave off very poor light.

After 1900 electric mine lighting devices replaced the safety lamp and by the 1930’s the lamps were used for the detection and measuring of explosive gases.

Today, safety lamps are mainly electric and/or battery powered; sealed to keep gases from emitting from the casings and igniting electrical sparks.
