NYC, NY – October 15th, 2010 – Bulbtronics, Inc., in conjunction with Acolyte Industries, Inc. has completed an LED enhancement project of the Island at New York City’s Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. The Island, which rises above the flight deck, was previously lit by a rented product that did not create the desired look for the ship. That’s when Bulbtronics and Acolyte stepped in to properly scope the project and resolve the lighting concerns.
The new LED lighting will be used to illuminate the Intrepid for both special occasions and for everyday lighting of the number “11” on both sides of the Island. “As a museum that also happens to be an aircraft carrier, we had some challenges with installing proper lighting to highlight the ship,” stated Darren Stone, AVP of Technology of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
“Determining the lighting design for this project was a challenge because of the angles of the ship. We had to be very strategic in where we placed the fixtures so as to evenly and entirely wash all the walls with color. Because of the ships gray color, we had to custom-configure the individual colors to achieve the end color that the custom wanted to see on the ship at night. We are overall pleased with the outcome of the design and look and the experience on this job has taken our company to another level,” said J.R. Guerrieri, CEO of Acolyte.
For the Museum, Bulbtronics, along with Acolyte, manufacturer of the LEDs used for this project, replaced the existing cold cathode light bulbs used on the museum’s number “11”, located on both sides of the ship, with high power water proof LED extreme ribbon lighting. This is a controllable lighting option that will now allow the ship to change the colors of the 11’s and reduce the energy usage, an option that was not available with the cold cathode light bulbs. Bulbtronics also used High Power RGB Exterior Linear Wash fixtures in 2’ and 4’ lengths for the main fixtures. Each of these fixtures is a 3 channel RGB fixture which uses standard DMX 512 protocol. Each LED fixture is independently operable, resolving the issue of needing more lighting control.
“Bulbtronics met this challenge head on and delivered an easy-to-use system that is impactful, green and affordable. The results are a great spread of color for the number of fixtures and very bright saturation. Overall the project came out exactly as expected.” Stone said.
“This was a very difficult, but exciting project for us to take on,” said Michael Nachman, LED Product Manager at Bulbtronics. We are extremely pleased with the results and hope this serves as a springboard for other museums and landmarks to consider energy-efficient lighting.”
